Cannabis & Exercise

Most people used to think of cannabis and think about someone lazing around on a couch, eating a bag of potato chips, but times are changing and so is the perception of cannabis and its abilities to affect the human body.

Since recreational cannabis has been legalized in 18 states (plus the District of Columbia) and medical use of cannabis in 36, how people talk about their use of cannabis has changed drastically. Gone are the days when cannabis was just a drug for “hippies” and “stoners.” Now, your average Joe takes some form of it just so he can get a full night’s sleep.  However, one topic that has the medical field buzzing is mixing the use of cannabis with exercise.

How Cannabis Effects the Brain

Dr. Jordan Tisher, an internal medicine physician and the president of the Association of Cannabis Specialists, says that cannabis quiets the part of the brain that feeds the ego and stimulates the brain receptors that generate dopamine. This results in the “go-with-the-flow,” attitude cannabis users can experience. In other terms, cannabis helps the mind de-stress, and find the mundane in life more fun. Once exercise doesn’t feel like a chore you have to do, of course you’re going to want to do it!

How Cannabis Effects the Body

A meta-analysis, published in April 2021, found that cannabis users tend to work out more than their cannabis-free counter parts. Furthermore, another study from 2014, Marijuana and Body Weight, stated that, “as of effects of marijuana on body weight in the general population, use appears to be associated with a lower body mass index.”

Along with weight loss, cannabis also has other health-restoring properties:

  • Reduces inflammation -A study, by Pandey et al., from 2011, found that THC and CBD could trigger an anti-inflammatory response, which would help regulate pain after an intense workout.
  • Eases soreness and pain – A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in 2010, found that arthritis patients reported lower pain intensity following an inhalation of 25mg of weed with 9.4% THC (that’s much less than most strains found in legal dispensaries)!
  • Treats muscle spasms – Cannabis has shown to have positive results in treating muscle spasms in relation to conditions like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease.
  • Improves sleep – THC induces sleep and can suppress dreams. This is particularly helpful for people who suffer from PTSD. CBD Can ease REM sleep disorder and fatigue. This point is especially important when regarding your health because of how much your overall fitness depends on your body getting the rest that it needs.
  • Improves mental acuity- According to a 2017 study, published in Nature Medicine, low doses of THC restored cognitive function in old mice.

University of Colorado Study

A recent study out of University of Colorado has left scientists and doctors questioning all of their preconceived notions of cannabis. This study looked at the self-reported data of 605 cannabis users in states where the drug is legal. The average was 37.5 and only slightly more men than women submitted their results. 81.7% of the users claimed they used cannabis before and after exercising.

The study showed that, on average, this 81.7% of users completed 43 more minutes of aerobic exercise per week and 30 more minutes of anaerobic exercise per week. They also surpassed the American College of Sports Medicine’s recommendation of 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week by 10 minutes. As Dr. Jordan Tisher mentioned, users claimed that it was cannabis that increased their enjoyment and aided in the recovery process.

What Strains Are Best for Exercise?

What strain you pick depends on what type of workout you’re doing. It’s true that, for most people, there is a tried-and-true method. While some people might use a sativa strain to give themselves a boost for the workout and use an indica strain for recovery post-work out, that might not always be the best course of action. What you need for a spin class or a long run, could be different than what you need for something that’s more high intensity.  At the end of the day, it’s a preference.

Cannabis & Exercise Testimonials

After interviewing several people for their article, “‘Stoner-cisers’ say exercising while high has helped them lose weight, be mindful, and maintain energy,” Insider found that those who ingested cannabis before exercising felt less anxious, more consistent, and were in less pain while exercising. One example of a success story came from Morgan English, who told Insider, “I went to my college gym, I got on the elliptical, and everything changed. I wasn’t worried about what I looked like. I wasn’t worried about why I went there to workout. It just took all the stress away. All the obsessive thoughts that don’t ever stop with anxiety, all of that melted way.”

Another participant in Insider’s article, Alex, stated that as an experienced athlete, he has been using cannabis before workouts for the last 12 years. He claims, “it helps me focus on breathing and get to a more meditative or mindful state. It helps me get more in-tune with my body and focus on specific muscle groups.”

Medicinal Cannabis: An Effective Sleep Aid

Having difficulty sleeping at night? You’re not alone. According to the American Sleep Association, “50-70 million US adults have a sleep disorder,” with insomnia being the most common disorder (30% of adults). Everyone knows that 7 to 8 hours of sleep is optimal for their health, but they don’t all know how to stay asleep for that long. A lot of people consider themselves to be light sleepers and may wake up periodically throughout the night. Others simply can’t fall asleep to begin with. Luckily, medicinal cannabis can help either group if they qualify for a prescription.

Why Can’t I Sleep?

If you’re wondering why counting sheep and drinking warm milk doesn’t put you to bed like it once did, Harvard Medical School offers the top 4 reasons why you’re not sleeping through the night. Reason #4 states that you could have an underlying condition such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or neuropathy. Enter medicinal cannabis – a safe alternative to pills that treats more than just sleep deprivation. This is especially true for chronic pain.

Will Medicinal Cannabis Help Me Sleep?

First off, it’s important to understand that there are a variety of strains when it comes to cannabis. Some will help calm your mind and body and a few will have the reverse effect – energizing you. Finding the right strain is easy when you work with a local dispensary, like North, that will guide you through the process of selecting the right product. The amounts of THC and CBD prescribed will depend on that conversation. One study from the National Library of Medicine shows that 15mg of THC “would appear to be sedative, while 15mg of CBD appears to have alerting properties.”

How Should I Use Medicinal Cannabis?

There’s more than one way to use cannabis when you want to get ready for bed. The quickest way would be inhaling. Once inhaled, cannabis (broken down into cannabinoids) is able to enter the bloodstream through the lungs and is then circulated throughout the body. Opposed to smoking or vaping? Cannabis can also be ingested through either food or drink. Edibles, specifically, are a highly preferred option for those with sleeping disorders. Since your body will have to digest the cannabis, it may take up to two hours before you feel it to the full extent.

Does It Treat Sleep Apnea?

There have not yet been enough studies done to know for certain that medicinal cannabis can be used to treat sleep apnea. For those who don’t know, sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where a person stops breathing multiple times while they are asleep. Common signs are loud snoring and feeling drowsy after a full night of sleep. If you’ve noticed this lately, or notice it in your partner, speak to a doctor about the best course of treatment.

Drive-Thru and Delivery Services

If this past year has taught businesses anything, it’s the value of offering drive-thru and delivery services. That’s why we will work diligently with patients who suffer from chronic conditions, mobility issues, or even those looking for a quick and convenient option through both once we open.

From the Car

As of 2020, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Section for Medical Marijuana has shown support for drive-thru services as an “option for better patient access,” according to an article in Greenway. The piece goes on to explain that people with chronic conditions rank second in reasons as to why Missourians become medical marijuana patients in the first place. When a dispensary offers drive-thru services, the patient never has to leave their vehicle. Think of it like a drive-thru pharmacy of sorts.

To Your Door

We want patients to be as comfortable as possible when working with North. That’s why we’re also going to be offering delivery services for patients. Your medical marijuana products can be preordered and paid for online and sent straight to the address you provide. Cannabis and Chronic Pain

Throughout the U.S., more than 50 million adults suffer from chronic pain. Injuries, conditions, and disorders are all potential factors of why someone might experience some form of it. Headaches, arthritis, and lower back pain are just a few examples. If you can relate with this condition, medicinal cannabis may be right for you. Here’s a little more background on chronic pain and what role cannabis plays in pain management.

What is Chronic Pain?

Healthline defines chronic pain as pain that lasts at least 12 weeks. It can feel like a burn or ache, and occur at any time without warning. The likely cause is nerve damage, which prolongs the sensation of pain. Another reason could be an underlying health condition. According to the CDC, chronic pain “has been linked to restrictions in mobility and daily activities, dependence on opioids, anxiety and depression, and poor perceived health or reduced quality of life.”

How to Manage Chronic Pain

There are a few options available for managing chronic pain and prescription opioids might be the first thing that comes to mind. These powerful drugs, however, are highly addictive and their use requires careful monitoring. Harvard Medical School lists cold and heat, exercise, weight loss, physical and occupational therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and others as alternatives to opioids.

Medicinal Cannabis and Pain Management

Healthline also recently found that “more than 62 percent of people who use medical marijuana do so to treat chronic pain.” Pain is a common condition that is treatable through medicinal cannabis. This is thanks to its main two main cannabinoids, THC and CBD. The human body’s endocannabinoid system accepts these through CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB2 receptors, specifically, have been shown to modulate acute pain.

Treating Nausea from Opioids

It’s possible that opioids become unavoidable for treating chronic pain. Fortunately, medicinal cannabis can still be used at the same time for treating pesky side effects like nausea. According to MarijuanaDoctors.com, “medicinal cannabis can be an ideal treatment for severe nausea.” Their research shows that cannabinoids have been able to provide relief from nausea since 1975. More specifically, types of THC and CBD have antiemetic properties.

Transiting from Opioids to Medicinal Cannabis

The medical world is trying to end the opioid epidemic, but there are still alarming numbers when it comes to overdose and death. The CDC recently constructed guidelines so that “patients have access to safer, more effective chronic pain treatment while reducing the risk of opioid use disorder, overdose, and death.” So what’s a patient to do when they no longer have access to opioids but still suffer from chronic pain? As their pain levels start to decrease, they can make a transition from taking opioids to solely using medicinal cannabis.

North Dispensaries: Coming Soon

The next thought for those suffering from chronic pain should be which strains of medicinal cannabis work the best for them. That’s a question North Dispensaries looks forward to answering when our locations in Jefferson County open. Stay tuned by following us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Still don’t have your Missouri medical marijuana card? Here’s how you can apply.

Cannabis and Mental Health Conditions

Mental health conditions affect peoples’ thoughts, behaviors, and feelings throughout the U.S. on a daily basis. In fact, one in five adults in our country experiences them each year. One resource in particular that people can utilize for relief is medicinal cannabis. This is especially important to know during the pandemic. One study recently showed that participants “with mental health conditions reported increased medicinal cannabis use by 91% since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic.” So what role does cannabis play when it comes to mental health? Here are a few examples relating to anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and depression:

Calming Anxiety

Anxiety is that nervous feeling you get when dealing with stress and it is completely normal. Persistent anxiety, however, may be the result of a disorder. Research currently shows that while cannabis does not cure people who suffer from anxiety long term, it can help them to calm down in the short term. This depends on a couple of factors including the type of cannabis being used and the dosage. Since THC is a psychoactive compound, a high dose of it could actually worsen your symptoms. A high dose of CBD, on the other hand, can be very relaxing. This is because the endocannabinoid system in our bodies process THC and CBD differently.

Recovering from PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that stems from a horrible event in life, causing nightmares, panic attacks, and fear in general. Those with PTSD can look to cannabis as a way to help them sleep better, remove pain, and calm their anxiety like we mentioned previously. Another recent study completed by Washington State University states that “people suffering from post-traumatic distress disorder report that cannabis reduces the severity of their symptoms by more than half, at least in the short term.” Even short-term results are helpful when it comes to recovery.

Coping with OCD

OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, “causes repeated unwanted thoughts or sensations (obsessions) or the urge to do something over and over again (compulsions).” We already know that the endocannabinoid system affects our anxiety, but it also plays a role in repetitive behaviors. Since cannabinoids like THC and CBD bind with CB1 and CB2 receptors, the obsessions and compulsions in this part of the brain can be reduced.

Handling Depression

If you are suffering from depression then you might notice negative moods, a decrease in your typical energy levels, or even suicidal thoughts. This condition affects one in 15 adults and can happen at any point in your life. Luckily, cannabis can help alleviate these feelings. In 2018, a study in the Journal of Affective Disorders showed that “medical cannabis users perceived a 50% reduction in depression.” It actually only took “two puffs” to decrease depression in this case. Even “baseline symptoms of depression (but not anxiety or stress) appeared to be exacerbated across time.” This proves that cannabis may be right for you if you are experiencing depression.

Research Continues to Gain Traction

While there is still a lot to learn about cannabis’s impact on mental health conditions, research is continuing to discover the important do’s and do not’s of treatment methods. A find like how particular dosages of each cannabinoid can result in completely different effects is a huge step in the right direction. For now, the best advice we can give is to speak to your doctor about medicinal cannabis as you may be eligible to apply for a Missouri medical marijuana card.

North Dispensaries wants to help patients live their best lives through relief that medical marijuana offers. We’re still in the process of opening but for now, check out our website for helpful videos and other informative blog posts. We’re beyond excited to fill your prescription one day soon!

Timeline of Missouri’s Cannabis Industry

Missouri’s medical cannabis industry has come a long way since its legalization in 2018. Here is exactly how we got here:

2014: SB-491 Passes to Decriminalize Less than 10 Grams of Marijuana

In 2014, Missouri passed Senate Bill 491. This declared possession of less than 10 grams of cannabis a misdemeanor crime, resulting in a $500 fine and no jail time. The bill, however, somehow passed through without receiving Governor Jay Nixon’s signature. It did not officially go into effect until 2017.

2017: SB-491 Officially Goes into Effect – 10 Grams of Cannabis or Less Results in a $500 Fine

This bill went into effect in January 2017.

November 2018: Missouri Legalizes Medical Marijuana

The November elections brought medical marijuana to Missouri. Amendment 2 modifies the Missouri constitution, signaling permanence and an intent to make medical marijuana accessible to eligible Missourians.

There were two other measures on the Missouri ballot. One of the losing measures, Amendment 3, set a 15% tax on medical marijuana and funds would go to researching cures and treatment for cancer and other diseases. This amendment also would not have allowed for home cultivation like Missouri’s current laws do.

Proposition C would have taxed medical marijuana sales at 2% and only allowed people with a limited list of certain conditions to qualify for a medical marijuana card. Amendment 2 passed by a margin of 66% to 34%.

December 2018: The 2018 Farm Bill Legalizes Hemp Nationwide

The 2018 Farm Bill was important to not only Missouri, but the nation as a whole. Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, spearheaded the 2018 Farm Bill, effectively legalizing hemp and removing it from the federal-controlled substances list. The bill also addressed other aspects of farming unrelated to hemp, like subsidiaries and others.

June 2019: Patients and Caregivers Begin Applying for their Medical Marijuana Cards in Missouri

According to Amendment 2, the Department had until July 6, 2019 to open applications for medical marijuana patients and caregivers. They were six days ahead of schedule on June 28. The Department has officially been taking applications for over a year, meaning many of Missouri’s patients have already gone through the annual renewal process.

August 2019: Facility Application Window Begins (and Ends)

Missouri began accepting applications for medical marijuana facilities on August 3. Immediately, the flood of applications and want-to-be cannabis businesses became apparent. There were 12 applications received in the first 48 hours. The deadline to submit applications was eventually extended, with some citing technical difficulties.

This caused a lot of uproar from applicants who felt their months of hard work preparing for the application process was undervalued and disregarded. Many applicants paid early bird fees to be ready to hit submit on their application the moment they were able to. On average, across plant-touching businesses, applications submitted per applicant equaled 1.5 with dispensaries being a little higher at 1.7.

December 2019: Facility Licenses Start Getting Approved

Testing was the first group of licenses that were awarded. The testing facilities are responsible for testing all aspects of the plant, such as THC levels, pesticide use, heavy metals, etc. Missouri awarded ten applicants licenses to test medical marijuana, eight more than Amendment 2’s required minimum of two facilities. There were 17 applicant groups for testing facilities – so seven did not receive a license.

After testing, transportation licenses were awarded. Transportation facilities are those certified to transport medical marijuana, like to the dispensaries for sale, testing facilities to test, or manufacturers to process the flower into products. What is unique about transportation licenses is the ability to apply at any time. The remaining sectors of the cannabis industry had a “one and done” application window. The majority of transportation applicants received a license during their initial application period, with 21 approved licenses and three denied.

The month of December brought one more approved license group: cultivation. Missouri approved 60 cultivation operations across the state, with 14 of them being in the St. Louis area. Only a small percentage of cultivation licenses were awarded out of the 600 applicants who applied.

December 2019: Lawsuits Begin

On December 27, Sarcoxie Nursery made headlines when they sued the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Sarcoxie Nursery felt they were wrongly denied a license to cultivate medical marijuana. The founders of Sarcoxie Nursery, the Callicoats, felt large corporations took over Missouri’s medical marijuana industry and pushed Missourians and the grassroots movement aside.

“Our family, along with tens of thousands of advocates from across Missouri, fought hard to legalize medical marijuana to bring healing to patients, as well as much-need economic opportunities to our local communities and to our state,” Dr. Callicoat said. “These large corporations that now have been awarded the lion’s share of the cultivation licenses were not involved in the effort either with time or money. It is wrong, and it is not what Missourians intended when they voted to legalize medical marijuana.”

January 2020: Remaining Licenses Awarded, Restraining Order Denied

On January 10, 86 approved manufacturing licensees were notified of their win. Upon manufacturing licenses being awarded, even more lawsuits took place on behalf of those applicants who felt they were wrongly denied, Sarcoxie included. A judge ultimately denied Sarcoxie’s request for a restraining order.

Seed-to-sale licenses were awarded in Missouri on the 13th of January. Seed-to-sale systems will track plants from the beginning of their life to the sale made in a dispensary.

Missouri approved 192 licenses for medical marijuana dispensaries in Missouri on January 27. DHSS ended up having to release a revised list of approved dispensaries due to one group accidentally receiving 6 licenses, 1 license over the 5 license per group cap. The freed-up license was given to LSL Management LLC. North Medical Group was honored to be one of the 192 licenses chosen to provide medical marijuana to the people of Hillsboro.

June 2020: BeLeaf Becomes First Cultivation Operation to Put Plants in the Ground – The Industry Has Begun

On June 11, St. Louis-based BeLeaf was the first cultivation operation to begin growing plants. The company already has a hemp cultivation operation and transitioned into medical marijuana. Other companies continue to cross their t’s and dot their i’s.

What Does the Future Hold?

With nearly 200 dispensaries in the state and adult use on the horizon, the potential for the marijuana industry in Missouri is infinite.

Demystifying Missouri Medical Marijuana Equivalency Units (MMEs)

If you’ve received your medical marijuana license, then you should know that you’re allowed to purchase up to four ounces of dried cannabis per month*. This limit is straightforward if you’re just planning on purchasing flower. But, it gets more complex if you plan on purchasing concentrates or infused products.

How many ounces of dried cannabis are in a tincture/oil or edible?

Thankfully, the state has published a conversion chart to help us compare apples to apples. In this case, they are called Missouri Marijuana Equivalency Units. This chart can be used to convert cannabis products to MMEs.

You can download a wallet-sized version of this chart through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

How will you know if your purchase is within the legal limit?

It’s your dispensary’s responsibility to communicate your purchase amounts with the state’s tracking system, METRC. Dispensaries will work with METRC to ensure that you do not exceed your purchase limits for any 30-day period. You don’t need to worry about accidentally purchasing more than 32 MMEs per month as your dispensary will prohibit you from purchasing more than this amount.

However, in addition to setting a limit of how much product you can purchase in a 30-day period, the state also sets limits on how much product you can have on hand at any given time. For this reason, we recommend keeping track of how many MMEs you have in your possession.

The average patient can possess a two-month supply of cannabis, which translates to 8 ounces of dried flower or 64 MMEs. Patients with a cultivator license can possess a three-month supply of cannabis, which translates to 12 ounces of dried flower or 96 MMEs.

Patients with caregivers

Patients with a caregiver cultivating on their behalf are also allowed to possess a three-month supply of cannabis. In this case, possession can be shared between the caregiver and the patient. For instance, a caregiver cultivating on behalf of a patient may possess 48 MMEs and the patient may possess another 48 MMEs. Any combination is considered compliant if the total shared amount of product doesn’t exceed 96 MMEs (12 ounces). It’s also important to note that patients being provided MMEs by their caregiver are not subject to purchase limits. Patients under the care of a caregiver are not purchasing marijuana. Rather, they are purchasing the service of cultivation and processing.

Making your own cannabis products

If you’re planning on making your own concentrates or edibles from flower that you purchase or grow yourself, we recommend labelling your product with the volume or weight and corresponding MMEs in case of a home inspection (for those with cultivator licenses) or a challenge by law enforcement (especially if you plan on transporting home-made edibles).

For more information on MMEs or how to obtain your medical marijuana card, check out the state’s medical marijuana handbook.

*Some patients may be allowed to purchase more than this limit if certified by two physicians: https://health.mo.gov/safety/medical-marijuana/pdf/physician-certification-form-alternative.pdf
